Buy a Medigap policy

To buy a Medigap policy, first make sure you have Original Medicare (Parts A and B) in place. You can purchase a Medigap plan from any private insurance company licensed to sell them in your state. The best time to buy is during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment period, which starts the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B. During this time, insurers cannot deny you coverage or charge more based on pre-existing conditions.

Compare the 10 standardized Medigap plans (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N) or Medicare SELECT versions available in your area. Plan G is currently one of the most popular because it covers most out-of-pocket costs. Use Medicare.gov’s Plan Finder tool or contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for free, unbiased help comparing plans and prices in your zip code.

Medigap Plans

Once you choose a plan, you can apply directly through the insurance company’s website, by phone, or through a licensed agent. You will need to pay a monthly premium in addition to your Medicare Part B premium. Prices vary widely by company, age, location, and tobacco use, so shopping around can save hundreds per year.
